Serbian literature and language

Study program aims

The content and structure of the Serbian Literature and Language study program are in keeping with the state of scholarship in modern Serbian and South Slavic philology. The foundation of this study program is the history of Serbian literature, literary-historical movements of South Slavic literature with special emphasis on Bosnian literature; a diachronic understanding of world literature, literary theory and methodology of studying literature; a theoretical knowledge and practical skills in methodology of teaching Serbian literature and language; knowledge in the field of linguistics, Serbian language history and modern literary language; and academic and general educational courses (academic writing, computer literacy, pedagogy, psychology, history, culture, ecology). In all parts of the studies, the study of specific features of national literature, language and culture is associated with acquiring insight into a broader context, first of all South Slavic and European.



Study program goals


This study program is intended to train students for identifiable, reasonable and socially useful professions and occupations.
These are professions that are of general importance for social development in:

• education from primary school to university (a professor of literature and language)
• raising the general language culture in society (journalists, proofreaders, reviewers and editors of the Serbian language in media and publishing houses and cultural institutions),
• in the globalization of society, i.e. in the field of information science and communication (copywriter, web copywriter, media educators and the like),
• international promotion of Serbian literature and language, particularly through the work of native language lectors.


Study program aims

The main aims of the study program are focused on acquiring specific skills and knowledge according to the contemporary trends in modern Serbian and South Slavic philology at the level of undergraduate studies. Students should be trained to deal,  on a expert basis, with the following professions and occupations:
• a professor of Serbian literature and language from primary school to university,
• a proofreader, editor journalist, and editor of  media and publishing houses and cultural institutions,
•a copywriter, web copywriter and media educators and other new occupations in the fields of information science and communications.


Competence of graduate students

By mastering this program, students will achieve the following competences:
• development of skills for critical thinking and approaches in research;
• mastering the skills needed to perform highly professional and analytical activities from the very broad field of philology, literature and communicology;
• ability to understand and present critical analysis, synthesis and problem solving in the field of philological sciences;
• capability of presenting their work;
• implementing acquired knowledge into practice;
• creative use of modern information and communication technologies.

Acquiring the general and specific competences, the student is qualified for the following professional services: a professor of Serbian literature and language in elementary, vocational and grammar schools, a proofreader, editor, journalist and an editor of the Serbian language in media and publishing houses, cultural institutions and in the field of communicology, particularly the Internet.
