The purpose of this study program is to offer the acquisition of expert and professional knowledge and skills according to the needs of society and projected social developmnty, in keeping with the highest European academic standards. This study program, which unified higher education teaching and research activity, as components of a unified process of hgher education, has as its purpose to qualify students for recognizable, socially justified and useful professions and work which are of general and fundamental importance for social development.
A specific purpose of the study program is also to educate students to continue their studies at the diploma academic level and at the level of doctoral studies in the field of English language and literature, to provide basic knowledge and skills connected with the English language, as well as Anglophone literature and culture, theory of literature. At this level of studies emphasis is also placed on the learning of the English language to the level of C2 of the Common European Framework for Modern Languages.
On completion of studies the student will master academic knolwedge and professional skills which include:
• a knowledge of the English language at the level of C2 as defined by the Council of Europe document entitled a Common European Framework for Modern Languages,
• a knowledge of the theory of language, theory o literature and culture of Anglophone countries,
• a knowledge of the theory of translation and the skills of translation,
• а knowledge of the teaching of language and the skills of teaching English as a foreign language,
• knowledge of pedagogical and psychological theory.
On the theoretical level the student is expected to be acquainted with the fundamentals of grammar, English phonetics and that he/she is able to correctly use all grammatical and phonetic structures of English.
Within the framework of the theory of language, it is expected that the student will have gained a detailed insgiht into the development of linguisticsa as a science and its specific fields which have been studied in detail within as the subjects and courses prescribed by the curriculum. The student is also qualified to use independently the relevent literature in these fields, as well as to present and defend the knowledge acquired in English, both in written and in spoken form.
Within the framework of the methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, it is expected that the student will have agined a detailed insight into the processes of intelligence, thought and learning, cognitive development, into pedagogical psychology, teaching principles and methods. Within the thoery of literature it is expected that the student will have gained a detailed insight into the history and theory of literature of the English speaking world, its genre and theme frameworks, to have gained an insight into the literary tradition of the English speaking nations (Britain and America), as well as into the latest trends in literary creation in the English language. It is also expected that the student will be qualified for independent use of relevent literature in the field of literary theory, as well as to be able to express in written or spoken form in English knowledge of literary works of Anglophone cultures.
Within the framework of the study of the history and culture of English speaking countries, it is expected that the student will have gained basic knowledge on the historical development, institutions of the system and specific cultural features of Great Britain and the United State of America.
